MMA Update - MA Safety & Awareness Period begins Monday, 22 March 2010!!
The Massachusetts Motorcycle Association (MMA) previously announced the 2010 Motorcycle Safety & Awareness Proclamation on Thursday, March 4th. Today, the MMA reminds its members and all motorcyclists that the Massachusetts Motorcycle Safety & Awareness Period begins Monday, March 22nd, 2010 and runs through the end of April.
With the rapid positive change in the weather, more motorcycles are coming out of storage than at any other time of the year. The rapid rise in motorcycle presence is only one factor of the warmer weather – motorists have forgotten the presence of motorcycles on the road and are not aware what to look for and are perhaps daydreaming of days on the beach or at poolside as opposed to shoveling snow. Thus, Motorcycle Safety and Awareness is critical this time of year for ALL motorists.
Working closely with the Massachusetts Rider Education Program, which is part of MassDOT, the MMA and MREP are hoping to expand communication during this period including signage and pamphlets in the RMV offices as well as roadway signage reminding motorists that motorcycles are on the roads. The goal is to maintain a positive presence throughout the Safety & Awareness Period.
The MMA would like to also caution its membership and all Motorcycle Riders that “Rider Responsibility starts with the Rider”. The RMV and local media already report 2 Motorcycle Deaths in 2010 in Massachusetts, and it’s the MMA’s hope that we can severely reduce the prior years’ statistics. Ride with respect and with caution – monitor your speed, remain visible to other motorists, and assure you leave an appropriate safety margin.
